Call for Landmark Cases: Housing Rights and Global Action Day, Jan. 26, 2008
In a recent meeting between FAL, HIC, and IAI the three organizations discussed ideas on how to prepare for the Global Day of Mobilization and Action on January 26th (http://www.wsf2008.net/). The Global Day is the central international effort of groups connected to the World Social Forum, and will serve as the end date of the 4-month campaign Act Together-Housing for All!
The three organizations came to the consensus that the best way to bring attention to housing rights issues is to identify landmark cases that we can all rally around on January 26th, 2008.
What are Landmark Cases?
Landmark cases are activities focuses on specific campaign themes and geographic centers, and that symbolically represent the many issues many of us address in our local and regional communities. The goal is to unite many of these in key places and use our resources to support that work on the 26th of January.
Some examples could be a peaceful protest in Nairobi, the passing of a law in India, and/or a conference on housing rights in Mexico or a political rally in Alberta.
We are looking for activities, events, and actions that represent central issues in the call to action also formulated by FAL, HIC and IAI and described below.
Struggling against:
-- evictions and any deprivation of housing and land rights
-- financial speculation and the corruption
-- negative effects of the privatization of land, housing, water and public services
We struggle for:
-- the inclusive city
-- the housing in dignity and in affordability
-- the security of tenure
-- the sustainability of our environment
Geographically we are seeking activities in - Asia (especially Southeast), Latin America & Caribbean, North America, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Australia.
