Seminar: Women and the Right to Housing

Women’s equal rights to adequate housing and to the access and ownership of land and other resources are widely recognized in national and international law. Nevertheless, women all over the world, in the North as well is in the South, still experience a situation of higher vulnerability to violations of these rights.  This international seminar on Women and Housing Rights will take place in Barcelona, Spain, on the 12th to 14th of February 2008. During those days, presentations and group discussions will be held on three themes:

   1. Women and the Access to Housing Resources
   2. Women and Habitational Violence
   3. Women and the Democratic Management of Housing and Resources

These themes are based on the findings from seven regional consultations on women and housing rights organized all over the world by the UN Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing between 2002 and 2006.The aim of the seminar is to create a strategy for the formulation of an international agenda for women and housing rights. These strategies will build on three aspects: visibility of problems faced by women in relation to housing, empowerment of social organizations and influence on housing politics.

Update: Membership

2007 is over. We went through it with huge challenges, consolidating the organization to extend the legitimacy of our struggle for a major justice and equity, to identify a new president to ensure the continuity in the achievement of the drawn up goals, to get to know and inform about the social production of habitat processes; to advocate the housing rights and the right to the city in the world

From the Campaign for the Housing and Land Rights that started in the month of October, we have joined the forces with other networks for the global mobilization of the World Social Forum 2008.

We wish you a lot of strength to go ahead with these demands and struggles during 2008...

In February in Barcelona, just before the International Seminar on Women and Housing Rights  (http://hic-net.org/foro/body.asp), we will have a Board Meeting and a General Assembly to define the Coalition strategy for the next three years (http://www.hic-net.org/news.asp?PID=549).

According to the HIC Constitution guidelines (http://www.hic-net.org/constitution.asp), we now invite you to update your membership.

In order to renew your membership, you should update your organization’s data --as well as yours— on the online service we have improved for this purpose (http://www.hic-net.org/membership).

Also annual dues should be paid to HIC.

The annual contribution is determined by a sliding scale related to the budget of your organization or to your personal income as HIC friend. To make the payment please consult: http://www.hic-net.org/joinFees.asp or contact marie@hic-net.org.

Best wishes and regards,
HIC General Secretariat

HIC Board Election Results – North America

Dear HIC Board and North American HIC Members,

The results of the North American Board Representative Election are complete. There were seven organizations that voted in the election. After calls from the General Secretariat (on September 3, September 26 and October 19, 2007) for the formation of an electoral committee and for the payment of membership dues, an Electoral Committee was formed by the end of November 2007. The Electoral Committee called elections and nominations for candidates on December 3, 2008. After dialogue with voting members about an expedited election process and modified guidelines in order to complete the election with so few voting members, the voting phase was commenced on December 14, 2008, with an e-mail to voting members. The closing date for votes was listed in the e-mail along with instructions and candidate bios. Voting ended on midnight, December 20, 2007. By January 3, 2008, the votes had been verified and counted with the following results:

The individual that has been elected, as the North American HIC Board Representative is Nick Volk and the Alternate is Anita Beaty.

Thank you all for your participation in the elections!

Best wishes,
Maria Foscarinis & Richard Stren
