HIC Statement Supporting Democratic Demands of the People of Bahrain
The Habitat International Coalition joins civil society worldwide in condemning the ruling al-Khalifa monarchy in Bahrain for its brutal and unwarranted attacks on peaceful and unarmed protesters demanding their democratic rights. The al-Khalifa regime has long been renowned for its corruption and nepotism, the torture of dissenters, material discrimination against the Shi`a majority population and looting the country’s wealth, leaving no more than 10 percent of the country’s land for all other Bahraini citizens to live on.
