Forced evictions in Douala

The National Observatory of Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ONDESC), the National Network of Inhabitants of Cameroon and the Platform for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights have taken note with indignation of the formal notices issued by the Prefect of the Wouri department dated December 1, 2020 and January 6, 2021. This decision requires the occupants of airport spaces to leave the premises before January 8, 2021 at the risk of forced eviction at their expense. Despite calls for mediation and the many complaints from the victims, the eviction operation was carried out on Saturday, 9 January 2021. Subsequently, nearly 200 families were dispossessed of their homes, despite the context marked by the Covid-19 pandemic and the organisation of the African Championship of Nations (CHAN).
