HIC’s President Declaration for World Habitat Day 2021 highlights that climate justice needs to be treated and enacted as a fundamental habitat-related human right.
Urban October 2021 offers us a moment to raise our voices in the defence, promotion and realization of our human rights related to habitat. This month is not only about urban sustainability, even though the theme of this year’s World Habitat Day (4th October) is “Accelerating urban action for a carbon-free world”. Social and environmental movements, activists, grassroots organisations, NGOs and local governments across the world are raising their voices in a joint call for climate justice, articulating equality, human rights, collective rights, and historical responsibilities for climate change as an urgent political and ethical issue. This includes many activities, campaigns and events hosted by HIC Members, Friends and Allies that you can join, support and amplify.
During this month and the beginning of November, when the next climate summit – COP 26 – will take place, HIC and its Members are calling for climate justice to be treated and enacted as a fundamental habitat-related human right.

Climate Justice as a Habitat-related Human Right: Takeaways from CoP26 for advancing people’s led climate action
On Tuesday, November 30th, Habitat International Coalition held the event “Climate Justice as a Habitat-related Human Right: Takeaways from CoP26 for advancing people’s led climate action” with the goal of discussing the outcomes of the Glasgow climate negotiations in the frame of climate justice and Human Rights, while highlighting some of the key pathways for building climate justice from a territorial perspective, anchored on human rights related to habitat. The event reunited a diverse group of speakers in order to engage both with the discussions that were held during COP26 and the numerous voices and approaches from the climate justice movement.
