The GPR2C – Global Platform for
the Right to the City is integrating the discussion on the post-2015 Agenda
within the Sustainable Development Summit in New York City, from 25th to 28th September. The meeting
occurs in parallel to UN General Assembly.

Represented by some of its
members, such as Habitat for Humanity, Habitat International Coalition,
ActionAid, Polis Institute, Wiego, and Communitas Coalition, the GPR2C aims to
bring to debate issues on the New Urban Agenda under construction from the Right
to the City perspective.

The 193 member states of the
United Nations will approve, during these days, the outcome document of 2030
Agenda for SDG (Sustainable Development Goals). The main
goal is to eradicate poverty around the world, in the next fifteen years, as
well as focus on areas of  “critical importance for humanity and the planet”:
People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership.

According to the statement, the
17 SDG and 169 targets announced demonstrate the scale and ambition of a new
universal Agenda. “They seek to build on the Millennium Development Goals and
complete what these did not achieve. They seek to realize the human rights of
all and to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.
They are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of
sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental”.

The document also includes
topics of the New Urban Agenda and looks forward to the upcoming UN Habitat III (United Nations Conference on Housing
and Sustainable Urban Development), to be held in Quito, Ecuador, in October
2016.

Goal 11 intends to make cities
and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. “By
2030, ensure access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic
services and upgrade slums”. In order to achieve this goal, the GPR2C
believes it is essential to have the Right to the City as the cornerstone of
all measures adopted to that end.
