What is a co-learning space?

Co-learning spaces are cross-regional, multi-session encounters that support participants to prioritise, strategise, learn and advocate together on human rights related to habitat. Co-learning spaces are based on emancipatory and intercultural learning practises, which link learning to concrete advocacy actions. They aim to support participants to build social force and speak with a strong interregional voice to impact policies and practises and effect transformative change.

The co-learning space on feminist approaches to habitat is a great opportunity to learn together with feminist networks and organisations in HIC from Africa, Latin America and the Middle East and North Africa regions to build social force and develop advocacy strategies for a just habitat for women, children and diversities.


When will it take place?

The co-learning space on feminist approaches to habitat will be hosted online in February 2022 over a period of four weeks (5, 12, 19 and 26 February). Each week will consist of an interactive live session of 2 hours via zoom plus 1 hour of your own time for preparation.

The co-learning space is facilitated by 6 HIC Members from Africa, MENA and Latin America with the support of HIC and the Knowledge in Action for Urban Equality (KNOW) programme.

The Co-Learning Space is open to all HIC Members, Friends and allies. 

Content of each session 

Session I: Why feminist approaches to habitat?

This session situates the contexts, key concepts, milestone achievements, histories and strategies of transformative feminism in relation to habitat. It enables participants to identify, recognise and appreciate their own struggles and the struggles of others.

Session II: Inequalities and violence

The second session focuses on the violence and inequalities experienced by women, children and diversities across different territories, due to their differential and intersectional access to habitat rights. It also discusses concrete and inspiring advocacy strategies from HIC Members in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East and North Africa to contest these inequalities. 

Session III: Care and the workplace

The third session continues to discuss inequalities in the fields of (reproductive) care and women’s (unpaid) labor. It will engage with the redistribution, recognition, and re-valorization of the roles and responsibilities of women as carers in different spheres. These include their households and families, state institutions, civil society and the environment. 

Session IV: Feminist advocacy strategies

Building on the co-learning from previous sessions, the final session supports the development of concrete feminist advocacy initiatives amongst participants. This will happen through sharing and discussing a portfolio of advocacy tools and methodologies and providing a space for building regional and cross-regional relations around common advocacy agendas.  

How to apply:  

  1. The deadline for submitting an application is Thursday 13 January 2022, 6pm GMT.  
  2. We will inform you about the outcome of your application by  21 January 2022 
  3. Please note that places are limited, so we have to take several selection criteria into account, including regional and organizational diversity.
  4. Requirements: 
    • You are able to commit 3 hours per week to participate in live zoom sessions and other online co-learning activities over four consecutive weeks. 
    • You are confident to read, write and speak in either Arabic, English, French or Spanish. 
    • You have access to a computer or mobile device and are comfortable working with, or open to learning, how to work with  online tools like email, zoom and google classroom.
