Conference Theme: Adequate and Affordable Housing for all.
The Kisumu International Housing conference to be hosted by the County Government of Kisumu in the Republic of Kenya is going to be the first of its kind. It will bring together all local stakeholders in the Housing sector and selected experts from across the globe to discuss the sector trends against the Sustainable Development Goals and New Urban Agenda and forge joint interventions. With the title ‘Adequate and Affordable Housing for all’, the conference is expected to deliberate on the factors that inhibit the development of adequate and affordable housing such as Land, Housing Finance, Infrastructure, policy and legal frameworks, building technologies, institutional arrangement and involvement of target beneficiaries. The conference will also offer a medium for networking among local and international stakeholders –urban poor federations, governments, academia, professionals, real estate and financiers. It is also expected that this conference will mark the beginning of much coordinated efforts among the local stakeholders. It is hoped that the conference with the high level speakers and delegations will be able to generate practical and implementable proposals to the City’s housing challenges.
Key Conference Objectives
- Identifying obstacles hindering realization of affordable housing and developing implementable strategies towards making the right to adequate and affordable housing a reality.
- Come up with practical and innovative strategies for implementing Adequate and Affordable housing.
- Share experiences and challenges and discuss the sector trends forging joint interventions.
- Offer a medium for networking and cooperation across sectors in matters related to the right to adequate and affordable housing
Conference Format
Day one
In the morning, the conference will be officially opened with inaugural remarks from selected remarkable leaders, local, and international, and thereafter officially opened by the County Government of Kisumu Governor. It will be followed by topical presentations by invited guests’ speakers and plenary engagements.
Day two
There shall key note remarks by the County Government of Kisumu CEC lands, Housing, Physical Planning and Urban Development on Kisumu City’s housing situation and interventions being implemented, followed by other selected National Government officials thereafter followed by break away sessions for in-depth discussions, consensus building and identification of mitigating/intervention proposals. In the afternoon, delegates will convene at the plenary to present their thematic group reports and address cross cutting issues. The day will end with visits to selected informal settlements and estates.
Day three
Thematic groups’ leaders will present a consolidated report, followed by plenary responses and concluding expert remarks leading to a delegates declaration of a “First Kisumu International Housing Conference on Adequate and Affordable Housing 2019”
