ARTifariti 2014 / Bring Down the Wall

Visualizing the wall
of shame that separates the Sahrawi families between occupation and exile was
the challenge that inspired the creation of ARTifariti in 2007, a festival that
was born to claim the right of individuals and peoples to their land, culture,
roots and freedom, through artistic practices.

The physical wall
is a system of stone and sand berms, minefields, military weapons, barbed wire,
detection systems and troops built by the Moroccan government in the 1980s as a
brake on the advance of the Sahrawi Liberation Army.

Hostilities ceased
in 1991, the year of the declaration of the ceasefire, that held the promise of
a referendum for the self-determination of the Sahrawi people; however, the
wall, and its increasingly detrimental consequences, still stand. It has
separated Sahrawi families, hidden torture tactics and repression of the
Saharawi population in the occupied areas, and changed the demographics of the
territory. The wall prevents the free movement of nomads and their cattle,
delivers the natural resources of Western Sahara to Moroccan plundering, and
day after day causes victims of landmines and remnants of weapons among bedouin
families. Its construction was meant to stop the will of a people but has
become a symbol of shame for all humanity .

Seven years after
its creation, ARTifariti 2014 proposes through the collective work of artists
from different nationalities to make an effort to break down this wall of over
2,700 km., the longest minefield in the world, and with it all the other walls
of exclusion that exist on our planet. The curatorial team for this edition, an
international collective of artists and curators, has proposed the creation of
pairs of artists of different identities that combine their knowledge and experience
to achieve this goal. Participation is also open to other creators who want to
work to tear down these walls and submit proposals to the organization.

In order to build a
world of possibility, walls of exclusion must be destrotyed. Tearing down the
Wall of Shame is a necessary step to restore peace and freedom in the Western Sahara.
In this effort, Art expresses all its dignity.
