The aim of the seminar is to consider strategies to prevent forced evictions and to develop alternatives for those suffering eviction, as well as options to ensure better coordination with partners and other organisations.
Guiding Questions
(1) What strategies do groups affected follow, how do local NGOs relate to them and act?
(2) What can be achieved through civil resistance or by negotiating with local authorities (con¬frontation and cooperation)? How useful and effective are pro-active, preventive strategies?
(3) To what extent are local as well as global capital investments or mega-projects accountable for evictions? In which cases can we claim “corporate responsibility“?
(4) In which cases did human rights/ lobbying efforts in case of evictions succeed? How neces¬sary and effective are Urgent Actions? What other human rights instruments do we have?
(5) How can more media attention on this topic be achieved in Europe?
(6) How can we identify plausible links between forced evictions in Asia, Latin America or Africa and the reality here in Europe? What do we expect and demand from governments, NGOs, from civil society in Europe?
Expected Results
- Intensification of contacts between agencies concerned with this issue
- Documentation of the current state of debate on the guiding questions
- Increased media coverage on forced evictions
