Time and Date: 20 February 2019 / 1:15 pm – 2:30 pm / Room CR. A / UN Headquarters, New York,

The United Nations 57th Session of the
Commission for Social Development
that takes place between the 11th-21st
of February in New York will be a perfect occasion to analyze habitat rights
challenges. For this reason HIC organizes
a side event to contribute to the policy process of
the United Nations Commission for Social Development, whose priority theme in
this year’s 57th session will be “Addressing inequalities and challenges to social inclusion
through fiscal, wage and social protection policies.”

The
side event, 20 February 2019 / 1:15 pm – 2:30 pm / Room CR. A / UN Headquarters, New York, will highlight inequality and social exclusion as it relates to
evictions, land, social injustices and gender inequality, issues that HIC has been dealing with over the past 40 years. Under
the title: “Addressing inequalities and challenges to
social inclusion: Housing and evictions, Extractive Industries and land
grabbing
” the
event will discuss human rights violations related to housing and land, in
particular forced evictions, while it will explore the community ownership of
land and housing cooperatives as an alternative to the private ownership of
land and housing.

Housing,
evictions and other challenges for habitat rights in the African context

The final program is being drafted by the
African representative of HIC’s Board Dr. Mrs Ifeyinwa Ofong together with the Habitat International Coalition
General Secretariat (HIC GS), the main organisers of the event. On this line,
the discussion will be focused in African countries and on the negative impacts
of extractive and mining industries seeking to divert its profits to local
populations through adequate taxation as well as to minimize land grabbing.

The final program will be distributed
shortly.
