Almost 3000 families at risk of forced eviction in Chile’s Valparaiso region

HIC

An eviction order affects 3,000 families in the San Antonio-Cartagena conurbation area in the Chilean region of Valparaiso. The order does not define responsibilities either to carry out the eviction or to respond to the anguish of the families.

The judicialisation of the access to housing is a violation of the right to housing; while the Parliament discusses the anti-takeover law, without putting human rights on the same level as the penal code.

With the parliamentary debate on the anti-takeover law and the eviction order of three thousand families by the Court of Appeals of Valparaiso, Chile marks the biggest setback in the fulfilment of the right to adequate housing in 50 years.
