International seminar of local governments for the Right to the City

The UCLG Committee on Social Inclusion,
Participatory Democracy and Human Rights and the city of Mexico are pleased to
invite you to the International
seminar of local governments for the Right to the City
, which will take place from 20 to 22 April 2015, in
Mexico City
The first bi-annual meeting of the Committee will also take
place on this occasion
.

The seminar has been
organized at the initiative of the Government of Mexico City, which has been
implementing the Mexico City Charter for the Right to the City since 2010
. The seminar
is in line with the 1st
World Summit of Local Governments for the Right to the City
 (Saint-Denis,
2012) and the 4th
World Human Rights Cities Forum
 (Gwangju, 15th – 18th May 2014).

Based on the ways that local governments are implementing the
right to the city through public policies, this seminar will focus on
strengthening the network of local government for the promotion of fair,
democratic, inclusive and sustainable cities towards the definition of the New
Global Urban Agenda (UN-Habitat Summit, Quito, 2016). To this end, it will also
be an opportunity to enhance strategic alliances between local governments,
civil society and the academic sector to reduce the social inequalities brought
about by unplanned rapid urbanization processes.

This seminar aims to be an open space for exchanges between
civil society, the academic sector, international organizations and
representatives of local governments committed to the Right to the City. It
will include several international speakers on all issues related to the
concrete implementation of this right: planning, housing, participation, gender
equality, cities for all, and united and inclusive metropolises. Furthermore,
Mexico City will propose field visits.

Finally, the International seminar of local governments for
the Right to the City is also an opportunity to promote concrete tools such as
the Global
Charter-Agenda for Human Rights in the City

and to
progress on its implementation.
