Living conditions in slums and the worldwide urban growth

This year, we interpreted the UN-Habitat theme (Cities, magnets of hope) into our theme which is the role of money in the process of improving the living conditions in cities: “How rich is the city? About finance, human & other capital in cities’.

The programme will be a mix of plenary sessions, workshops, mini-courses, and we organise a ‘Marketplace Habitat” on which different organisations can present themselves, offer and demand services. An important goal of the day is to realise co-operation between organisations. We try to make ‘matches’ by using a special wall, on which participants can write what they are looking for and which knowledge or experience they have to share with others.

Some of the themes that will be discussed on October 2nd are:
The future of the city: where do we have to invest in and who has to invest?

  • What makes a location interesting for a bank to invest?
  • How can we improve the current limiting aspects of the location?
  • What is micro credit, what are community funds and social housing, and how do they work?
  • What are conditions for finding funding for slum upgrading?
  • How do poor people spend their money, and what is the influence on (Dutch) housing projects?
  • What are the different funding possibilities for your work?

Time: 12 am – 6 pm
Place: Concordia, Hoge Zand 42, The Hague

Participants on this event will be: public authorities, politicians, housing associations, ngo”s, consultants, scientific institutes and other centres of expertise, ngos, companies and other people who are interested in the theme. We hope to welcome our Minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment, Mrs. Sybilla Dekker and many other outstanding persons. We expect 250-300 participants.

More information (in Dutch) will be published soon on www.habitatplatform.nl .
