Nairobi: The 7th World Social Forum

The 7th World Social Forum will be held in Nairobi, Kenya from January 20th – 25th, 2007 at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

This is an important event that will bring the world to Africa. Activists, Social and Labour Movements, Networks, Coalitions and other progressive forces from Asia-Pacific, Latin America, the Caribbean, North America, Europe and all corners of Africa will converge in Nairobi, Kenya for five days of cultural resistance and celebration, panels, workshops, symposia, processions, film nights and much more.

Globalization has opened us to new challenges that due to its novelty demand a new political action. Fresh and renewing proposals can only spur from an external political pressure, external to social and cultural institutions that can develop initiatives that have a real impact on public opinion and modify the power balance in the form of change proposals. It is civil movements that move towards political change, which is indispensable to confront the new territorial challenges.

Diverse social collectives are who today propose new strategies on this territory. The demand of a city and public spaces, as well as other topics, require a new political culture that constructs a speech that promotes legitimacy and coherence to civic movements. In this sense, efforts to reach the World Charter for the Right to the City require the joint effort of different organizations. The proposal, born and very strong in Latin America, today opens a new space so that organizations from other continents gather towards the same challenge.

HIC will promote the Human Rights/Human Dignity Caucus and the Urban Spot with a presentation about The Right to the City: the Charter process.

The right to the City is the right to manifest urban liberties. The global urban offer must be accessible, known and attainable by all those that live in the metropolitan region.
