Social Ecology, Participatory Democracy & the Environmental Crisis

Date: 27 March, 8h30-11h.

Location: Room SP17, WSF venue.

Organised by the
Transnational Institute of Social Ecology and Democratic Transition In the face of the
unprecedented urbanization with the massification of cities, waves of
immigration and not least the environmental crisis, it is crucially important
that we go beyond mass demonstrations. We have to transform how our societies
are organized so that they can handle the ecological and social challenges that
we are facing. Social ecology has some important answers and is a pertinent
critique of environmentalism. Social ecology emphasizes the need for the
development of a participatory democracy and of a moral economy. Possibilities
to drive this change lie in social movements acting in local politics using
cities and municipalities as arenas for change. This overall theme will be
discussed and case studies will be presented as alternatives. Whispered
translation should be available. Dimitri Roussopoulos (Montreal) and Malin
Widehammar (Gothenburg). Transnational Institute of Social Ecology in
collaboration with Democratic Transition (Sweden).
